Stuck indoors due to bad weather or safe at home due to quarantine? Check out some of our favourite ideas for indoor fun to keep you and your dog entertained!
1. Teach your dog a new trick
2. Give your dog a chew adventure!
Know your dog’s dietary and chew parameters prior to deciding on their chew adventure. Look to your veterinarian for guidance. A bully stick, stuffed Kong (potentially frozen) or raw bone, might all be options for a long chew excursion.
3. Get your dog using their nose to find treats and toys
Start by having your dog watch you hide multiple treats around a room. Then release them to hunt. As they understand the challenge, make it harder and different. For example, up higher, hidden, etc.
4. Food confetti!
Have your dog eat their food all over the house. Toss food anywhere and have them search and find.
5. Use food toys to deliver meals
Kong is one of our favourite manufacturers. You can also try hiding dry food in a muffin tin, add tennis balls on top for additional hunting!
6. Try indoor retrieving!
Use hallways, unfinished basements, or large, open rooms to avoid concerns for both your dog and furnishings.
7. Teach your dog to use a treadmill
Make sure this is appropriate for your dog by discussing with your vet first. The treadmill needs to be long enough for your dog’s stride length and you need to motivate your dog to do this by teaching with treats.
8. Spend some quality time together by having a cozy date night
Enjoy being in each other’s presence by doing what your dog wants to do. Petting, playing with a toy or hanging out in the same room. Sometimes we forget that social contact time is very enriching for our dogs!
