Calm Canines Agility

Agility is a dog sport where handlers guide their dogs through an obstacle course, aiming for speed, agility, and accuracy. Agility requires dogs and their handlers to be connected and responsive to each other’s cues and is a great way to have fun and strengthen the bond between dog and handler.

Our Calm Canines Agility Program is designed specifically for sensitive dogs including those that find working around other dogs and/or novel environments challenging. Our classes help dogs, and their humans develop essential life skills while building their confidence and calmness through agility skills. Designed for dogs and their humans that need extra support with fear, anxiety and/or overarousal, our program offers the opportunity to grow agility skills, life skills, and have fun!

The classes within our Calm Canines Agility program follow a thoughtful progression from foundational agility and life skills to more complex skills and environments. Our program will help improve your dog's agility skills but also teach essential skills and strategies that enhance their ability to handle everyday life with more ease.

Uncut Gems (Agility Foundations)

The Agility Foundations Class is thoughtfully designed for sensitive dogs and their humans, introducing the sport of agility in a calm and supportive environment. The course focuses on building trust, communication, and confidence between you and your dog through fun, low-pressure activities that promote connection and teamwork.

Our agility foundation class teaches your dog to navigate the agility environment at their own pace, ensuring they are comfortable and confident before progressing to more challenging set ups. You and your dog will learn foundational agility skills such as focus, waiting calmly, body awareness, recalls and toy play – all of which helps build resilience and confidence in the agility environment. Dogs will also be introduced to agility equipment including jumps and tunnels.

This course will provide you with valuable insights into your dog's unique sensitivities and offers practical tools to manage situations while working on growing calmness and resilience. Whether your dog is shy, anxious, or easily over aroused this class sets the stage for growth, giving you both the agility skills and transferrable life skills to succeed together.

In this class, you and your dog will practice working on the agility equipment with greater focus, coordination, and control, and start to link together agility sequences. Positive reinforcement remains at the heart of our approach, ensuring that sensitive dogs feel safe and supported as they try new challenges. Life skills are also a strong focus in this course including stationing on both a mat and in a crate between turns, following your cues, recalls and working around distractions.

This class offers you continued guidance on reading your dog's signals, improving communication, and enhancing your handling techniques, and strengthening the bond between dogs and handlers.

In this class, you and your dog will work on more complex course patterns, combining multiple obstacles with increasing difficulty. We continue to emphasize confidence-building and calm behaviours in more challenging environments, allowing sensitive dogs and their handlers to grow their skills without being overwhelmed. Dogs will also continue to refine their stationing and crate skills, and their ability to work around distractions.
