SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE TREATS

Treats are an essential training tool to help motivate and teach puppies new skills and commands. Puppies, like all dogs, respond well to positive reinforcement, and treats are an effective way to reward them for desired behaviours. Treats and bones will also be crucial in aiding in enrichment activities for your puppy.

TREATS

Not all treats are created equal. Your puppy will develop a preference for different valued treats. When you’re training in a distracting environment, asking your puppy to do really hard things, or training a skill that requires a lot of reinforcement (like recall) you will have better results if you use a higher-value treat. Kibble is typically on the low end and treats like cheese, chicken, deli meat or peanut butter, are on the higher end.

CHEW ITEMS

Puppies no longer need to split bones and grind down marrow to survive, but the urge is hardwired into them. Chewing is normal and healthy, not a behaviour problem. But it can still be a regular problem—for you and your furniture.

Puppies tend to chew more than adult dogs, yes, but chewing isn’t like teething in babies; it won’t peter out and eventually stop. All puppies chew some and some puppies chew a lot. Either way, give your puppy plenty of allowed things to chew right away to get him hooked on those instead of your shoes. And don’t forget, a tired puppy mouth is also less likely to chew on you!
